Tips for
Breastfeeding Success
- Take a breastfeeding class through
your local Hospital the last trimester of pregnancy. You
may want to register early as these classes fill up early.
You may also take a class with a Certified Lactation
Educator in private practice. Ask your Obstetrician or
Local hospital for a list of the professionals in your
area.
- Read a good Breastfeeding Book, like Kathleen
Huggins " Nursing Companion".
There are several good books on the market. Check out the book
category for more
information.
~ Signs Your
Infant Is Getting Enough ~
- When you deliver your infant, nurse
as soon as possible. A minimum of 8 times in 24 hours for
15 minutes each breast or longer.
- In the first few days after your
delivery, your infant should wet at least 2-3 diapers and
stool at least once.
- When your mature milk comes in, days
3-5 postpartum you should be able to count 6 or more
urines, and one or more stools. It is normal for a
breastfed infant to stool with every feeding.
- Try to avoid bottles, nipples and
pacifiers the first three weeks while you're getting
breastfeeding established.
- It is normal for your infant to lose
up to 10% of it's weight initially with a regain of birth
weight by week two.
